PLA - the material of the future

PLA - biodegradable material
PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) is a biodegradable material, derived from renewable resources on something as natural as corn starch or sugarcanes.
PLA is used in a number of biomedical applications, such as sutures, stents, dialysis media and drug delivery devices. Furthermore PLA is used for packaging, compost bags, disposable tableware. In the form of fibers and nonwoven textiles, PLA has many further potential uses, disposable garments, awnings, feminine hygiene products ect.
PLA is a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-derived products, since the lactides from which it is ultimately produced can be derived from the fermentation of agricultural by-product such as corn starch or other carbohydrate-rich substances like maize, sugar or wheat.
PLA will not decompose instantly, but will start to decompose slightly when the product is in direct contact with organic substance, such as soil.
PLA will - over time - decompose completely when in direct contact with organic substance - or in large scale operation with temperatures of 60 C and above.
